Kakhtuvni Monastery

The less known Kakhtuvni monastery is located on the bank of the river Kakhtuvni. The approximate date of its construction belongs to VIII-IX centuries. The monastery and the whole region were regularly raided and every time the monastery was rebuilt.

The monks left the monastery only after the army of Shah Abass came there. Before leaving, the monks hid unique holy icon of the Mother of God in the walls of the monastery and only nine centuries later the icon was found. Unfortunately, the icon was lost in Soviet times, and even after the resumption of service and the reopening of the monastery, the icon hasn't been found and returned to the monastery.

During the visit to the monastery, you also have an opportunity to taste Georgian wine produced there by the monks. On the territory of Kakhtuvni there is a small vineyard with the sweetest grapes.
