Gremi Castle

Gremi Castle rises above the picturesque Alazani Valley in the Georgian historical region of Kakheti. The fortress was built in 1563 in Gremi town which flourished before the devastating raids of the army of Shah Abbas I. The town burnt to ashes, and only the fortifications behind the fortress wall were partially preserved.

Today the Gremi Castle is considered a popular attraction of Kakheti and one of the most visited in Georgia. It is located on the top of a hill and from the height attracts the attention of travelers. From a distance, it seems that the walls of the fortress are of different heights. The fact is that the walls are built on an uneven mountain range repeating the terrain.

The main attraction of the complex is the church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. The founder of the Gremi, the king Levan of Kakheti is buried on the right side of the main entrance. The temple is built of bricks, the inner walls of the church are decorated with frescoes.

In the former belltower of the castle, a museum is opened, in which a collection of ceramics and bronze, as well as other finds from the excavation of the territory, are presented. One of the most impressive things of the complex is a unique castle toilet that was a rare thing in those days.
