Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin

The Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is located on one of the ancient streets of Tbilisi. The temple was built for the Catholic community, which had no church building until the XIX century.

The temple was built in 1804 thanks to the prefect of the city Francesco Paduel. After the construction, the temple was expanded and restored. The Soviet government closed the church and only in 1999, during the visit of Pontiac John Paul II, the temple was consecrated and opened to the congregation.

Before the main entrance, there is a beautiful statue of the Virgin Mary with Jesus in her arms. The facade and the main gate are decorated with images of saints. The stained-glass windows at the main entrance are decorated with images of archangels.

The inner walls of the temple are also decorated with gold and paintings. Huge double-decker chandeliers are hung from the high ceilings.
