The Tour “Cave towns of Georgia” would interest all lovers of the mysterious ancient sights. You will visit the ancient cave monastery complex of the VI-th century, explore carved in the rock cave town Uplistsikhe, as well as an outstanding monument of medieval Georgian architecture – Vardzia. Day 1

  • Arrival at the airport, transfer to the hotel

Day 2

  • City tour around Tbilisi – bright and hospitable capital of Georgia
  • The tour starts from the open air Museum of Ethnography located on the territory of Turtle Lake. The museum displays exhibits of the Georgian folk architecture reflecting the life and ethnic identity of the 14 regions of the country. You will see models of traditional houses and farm buildings collected from all regions of Georgia.
  • Stroll to Meidani Square-the place was the part of famous caravanserai.
  • Trip to the historical district of Metekhi, where you will visit the Assumption Church and the monument to Vakhtang Gorgasali – the founder of Tbilisi.
  • Trip by cable car to the Narikala Fortress – one of the most ancient Tbilisi sights built in the IV-th cent. Narikala is a true symbol of the capital.
  • Stroll through Botanical Garden to the beautiful waterfall
  • Tour to Abanotubani – royal bath complex (XVII-XIX cc.) standing on the natural sulfur springs. The baths have unique architecture and interesting history.
  • A trip to Mtatsminda Mount by funiculer

Day 3

  • Visit to David Gareji cave monastery complex. This unique complex consists of 20 monasteries of the VI-th century founded by Assyrian monk David of Gareja.
  • Return to Tbilisi

Day 4

  • Drive to Vardzia through Javakheti region.
  • Stop at Paravani Lake which is the biggest in the country and is surrounded by the spectacular scenery. Near the lake, you will visit the monastery of St. Nino, at the territory of which there is a small dairy managed by local nuns. Here you will find various unique kinds of cheeses that cannot be found anywhere else in Georgia.
  • Stop at Khertvisi Fortress (X century) for making memorable photos.
  • Excursion to Vardzia – a unique cave complex of the Golden Age (XII -XIII cent.), the first cave of which was created during the reign of Queen Tamar’s father, George III. In ancient times, the complex served as a refuge for civilians. On the territory of Vardzia there is a functioning monastery and temples.
  • Trip to Akhaltsikhe town

Day 5

  • Excursion to Rabati Castle – a medieval structure in Akhaltsikhe which is dated back to the XIII-th. Recently renovated Rabati Castle was reopened in Akhaltsikhe in August 2012 and now is the main attraction of the town.
  • Trip to Borjomi – a cozy and green resort town famous for its healing mineral water “Borjomi”. Here those who wish will be able to try mineral water straight from the spring.
  • Return to Tbilisi

Day 6

  • The tour continues in Mtskheta – a beautifully renovated town belonging to the 2nd half of the I millennium BC, the first capital of Georgia.
  • The excursion to the Svetitckhoveli Temple  – the cathedral of XI-th century, the main cathedral of Georgia.
  • Then you will go up the mountain to the monastery of Jvari. This area offers a breathtaking view to the confluence of the Aragvi and Kura rivers.
  • On the way to Tbilisi, you will visit the cave town of Uplistsikhe. This ancient cave town, carved into the volcanic rock of Kvernaki ridge, is one of the first in Georgia and is famous for its three-thousand-year history. Once there were houses, streets, churches, public buildings and squares.
  • Return to Tbilisi
  • Visit to Tbilisi flea market for buying Georgian souvenirs

          Please note, that to enter Georgian orthodox churches ladies will need to have scarves for covering their heads (they can find some at the entrances). In some cases, ladies will be warned to wear skirts. Short trousers are forbidden in the church.
