Religious Tour to Georgia

In I century AD, Christ’s apostles Simon and Andrew came to preach Christianity in Georgia. Nevertheless, the conversion of Georgia to Christianity is associated with St. Nino, who came to Georgia in IV century. Georgia was converted to Christianity in year 326 and became one of the first countries in the world to adopt Christianity as the state religion. And now this country is a treasure trove of important Orthodox religious monuments. We created our Religious Tour to Georgia for all those who want to make a pilgrimage to holy places and visit all the important religious monuments of Georgia.

 

Day 1

  • Arrival at the airport, transfer to the hotel

 

Overnight: hotel in Tbilisi 

Day 2 – Tbilisi city tour

  • The tour starts from the visit to Tsminda Sameba Cathedral – the main cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church.
  • Trip to Metekhi cliff, where is located the Catholic Church of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary built in the XIII-th century.
  • Trip to the ancient Narikala Fortress by the cable car
  • Visit to Jumah Mosque and Great Synagogue
  • Tour continues to Sioni Cathedral named after Mount Zion in Jerusalem. The cathedral keeps the Grapevine cross of St.Nino, which is the major symbol of Georgian Orthodox Church.
  • Next stop – Anchiskhati Church, the oldest surviving church in Tbilisi, built in the VI-th century.
  • After we will visit St Peter and Paul Catholic Church, which was built in XIX century
  • The destination of the tour – Armenian Norashen Holy Mother of God Church, which was built in XV century

Day 3

  • Departure to Mtskheta, the ancient town and the first capital of Georgia. Here Christianity was proclaimed the state religion. Mtskheta is the cult place for all Georgians.
  • Visit to Svetitskoveli Cathedral – one of the principle cathedrals of Georgian Orthodox Church, UNESCO heritage site. Here is buried Christ’s robe.
  • Visit to Samtavro Transfiguration Orthodox Church and Nunnery of  Nino in Mtskheta, built in the IV century by King Mirian III of Iberia
  • Climb up the hill to Jvari Monastery – the amazing symbol of the Georgian church architecture. According to the legend, at the site of the monastery St.Nino established one of her three crosses. The name «jvari» is translated from Georgian as «a cross».
  • Return to Tbilisi

Day 4 

  • At this day you will visit 2 monasteries which were founded by Assyrian fathers.
  • Trip to Shio-Mgvime Monastery – a medieval monastic complex established in the second half of the VI-th century by one of the 13 Assyrian fathers – Shio.
  • Next tour to Zedazeni Monastery located on the Zedazeni Mountain. The church was founded by Saint John – one of the Holy Assyrian Fathers.
  • Return to Tbilisi

 Day 5 

  • Departure to Kakheti – the oldest wine region of Georgia
  • Tour to Alaverdi Monastery. It was founded by the Assyrian monk Joseph Alaverdeli, who was originally from Antioch
  • Trip to Nekresi historic town of Kakheti region. Here you will see Nekresi Church located in very scenic place.
  • Visit to Ikalto academy which was one the important cultural-scholastic center of Georgia.

 

Overnight: hotel in Telavi

 Day 6

  • Departure to the town of love, Sighnagi, which is located on the top of the hill and is surrounded by the wall with 28 towers.
  • Visit to the Monastery of  Nino at Bodbe where was buried the founder of Christianity in Georgia, St. Nino.
  • The last excursion of the tour to David Gareja a rock-hewn monastery complex founded in the VI century by David (St. David Garejeli), one of the thirteen Assyrian fathers.

          Please note, that to enter Georgian orthodox churches ladies will need to have scarves for covering their heads (they can find some at the entrances). In some cases, ladies will be warned to wear skirts. Short trousers are forbidden in the church.
